Why are We Happy? Speech given by Dan Gibert. Filmed: Feb 2004, and posted Sep 2006.
This speech was very well approached in all rhetorical areas. Dan surveyed college students to going to hospitals and asking amnesia patients. Using famous people who have went through situations relating to this topic. Describing that we all are human and we all make the choice to be happy or not, no matter the situation. Using very stable credibility due to using the New York Times as a source to all sorts of research graphs and percentages he found on this hot topic. Also very emotional knowing that someone who has health problems that make them not even able to function like a normal person, their just as happy as someone completely healthy. Whom those individuals take life for granite everyday, and are the ones who think their life is over, for something that may have happened that's so small. There were also a ton of statistics on this showing the percentage of people who are living in a world of natural happiness versus synthetic happiness. Overall a very knowledgeable and persuasive speech, it completely shocked me on how many people take life for granite.
Human brains have tripled in mass over the course of the last two million years. When brains triple in size it gains structure. A term called perinatal cortex which is an experience stimulator. This is experiences in a humans head before they actually experience something, they think they know the outcome, or assume it. Dan compares individuals who have won the lottery versus paraplegic, after one year of the outcome of both of these incidents, they were equally happy. Now we can all imagine what really makes us truly happy. Were the only one who can decide the fate of our happiness. Another term used is called the impact bias simulator, is to work badly one assumes. Peolple beleive different outcomes of something than they really are. Major life traumas such as loosing a boyfriend or loosing your job, statictics show that after a period of three months these things have no impact at all. Natural happiness is a term to be described as an individual getting something they want, when in deed this is the enemy to synthetic happiness. Synthetic happiness is something we determine due to the fact we are unable to control all that happens in our lives, so were either able to go forward with a smile and make the best of the situation. Or be angry when all this is hurting is yourself.

The DK Handbook:

Why Cite and Document Sources: Don't we all want to live in a world where people respect others ideas and research by their supporting evidence? The reason is that when people do read your work they don't have to like it, but they can judge that by looking up your supporting evidence. Cite means, to name the people from whom you got your ideas. To document is where exactly you found these ideas. Such as in a newspaper, book, online etc.

Citing and Documenting: There are four facets to citing and documenting. the first is using others words in your writing by quoting, summarizing or paraphrasing. Second is collecting the citation information you need for any source you use. Third is creating In-Text Citations for your sources. Fourth is creating Work Cited References Lists and Bibliographies.

Quoting, Summarizing and Paraphrasing: Quoting is emphasizing the exact words that are used by the author. Summarizing focuses readers on the main points of the argument. Paraphrasing allows you to maybe make difficult reading used by the author, into easier reading that the reader can understand.

Sources: There are five kinds of sources and each one requires different citation information. One is printed books. Two is parts of printed books. Three is print periodicals. Four is web pages and five is everything else. The DK Handbook gives you the pages to find out more on how to cite these sources.

Hints and Tips for Evaluating Sources: Make sure you have enough credible sources to persuade your audience that this is an arguable topic. Look at your thesis statement to make sure you can answer the question of the argument for your readers.

"The Horror of Eating Disorders"

This is how it is, eating disorders are a huge epidemic in the world today. Woman especially, and young teens want to look like all of the models. This generation is expecting woman to have the hour glass figure, no flaws. So this establishes one of the causes of an eating disorder. There is so much pressure put on by the social economy to be slender. Due to the lack of correct parenting, and just eating healthy, woman are falling into a deep dark never ending battle of what we define as an eating disorder. The big argument here is how serious it can effect you for the rest of your life. What can we do to change the idea of being perfectly shaped. Analysts warn us that two out of one hundred kids struggle with an eating disorder. Most commonly anorexia or bulimia. It also suggests that unfortunately many kids and teens are able to hide this from their families, for months or even years. Due to these statistics, this implies parents aren't paying close attention to all the important warning signs of an eating disorder. Are these parents bad parents, or are they just not realizing, or just in denial of something so life changing as an eating disorder can be. Some of the signs are, losing weight, even if your child is already slender. Saying all the time that their not hungry, thinking or talking about being fat consistently. One big one is excessive exercising to lose weight. This can damage you for the rest of your life. The fact is that woman don't think about the long term consequences, they often think of the short term happiness of looking good. People with anorexia have an extreme fear of weight gain. This becomes an obsession to them, watching every calorie they intake into their bodies. Always asking questions about the calories. Bulimia is excessive, or binge eating, and rarely experiences the low weight associated with anorexia. Although anorexia and bulimia are very similar, people with anorexia tend to be thin and people who struggle with bulimia may be of normal weight, or even over weight. Due to these facts and statistics parents need to be aware and alert of what's going on in there child or teens lives. This does and can start at a young age. It's known to be a very hard obsession to get rid of.

Creating a Topic

Answers to the questions:

A. Making sure it fits the assignment, assigned by the instructor. Interesting to you. It can be researched.

B. Library Catalogs, intranet, databases and newspapers.

C. Female basketball athletes in Utah.

D. Bills, cellphones, state legislatures, laws, reckless driving and offenders.

E. Databases: Using two specific words, such as child and obesity.
Subject: Using one word, such as agriculture.
Finding full text: Such as typing in an article, and where it was written.

F. If your looking for a topic with two key words it saves a lot of time. Due to the fact it will pull up everything the database has on only those specific two words being used together. Not information on each word by itself.

Creating a Topic:

How to create a good and interesting topic. Also how to find your topics. Anyone can go to the public library, or your school library and look on databases. Or the library news page on the Internet. All you have to do is drag your mouse over the covers of the books and it will give you a brief summary of the book. You can also look in newspapers such as the Salt Lake Tribune, or Deseret News. Go online and look in google or the wikipedia. Some topics are to broad and you will get to many results such as entire fields of study for example, politics or physiology. To create a more narrow topic think of more specific such as, where, when what kind. Make topics into a open ended question. Then follow that into a thesis and pull key words out to help find your specific topic.

Cellphone Habits of the Experts:

Rony Seger, of Weizmann Institute of Science, claims to only use his cell phone no more than one hour a day. "Everything is a matter of dosage"(Seger 1). He suggests in keeping your cellphone at least twelve inches from your body, and using your speakerphone. Christopher Woollams, Founder and CEO of Canceractive, also agrees. Has three children with cellphones and won't even let them carry them around. Only to text sparingly or to use the speakerphone for emergency. He suggests you don't carry them on your bodies while they are turned on. Other experts such as Micheal Repacholi and John Boice say, they really are not concerned about the usage of cellphones. How many calls an individual might make in a day, if at all possible use a hands free kit. Which can reduce exposure levels by a factor of between 10-100. If you can't do that, cellphone use isn't going to kill you.

Speech to the Virginia Convention--

This speech is a very powerful and convincing word of wisdom that effects all Americans in 1775.
This is a fight against slavery and freedom of our liberty. We must all stand together and not back down. This speech is titled, Speech to the Virgina convention. Written by Patrick Henry. He spoke that he is guilty of taking advantage of freedom and liberty, so he can tell us all first hand that he wants to be a better person and not just sit back and watch, we all need to act. He has researched this and is a very intelligent writer. He acknowledges where he's gone wrong in all of this battle. The tools in this speech are very powerful, he starts out and throughout the whole speech as being very persuasive, getting all of the world to realize we need to fight. Second, he is very knowledgeable in what he's speaking according to what he's researched.

1. He sees that all of every man across this nation seeing slavery and war through different perspectives. He is one to have spoke and admitted to taking advantage of liberty. While greatly acknowledging those who are fighting and risking there lives for our freedom and liberty.

2.The word "light" means that every man has different point of views. Some might be offended, but Patrick Henry is going to share with the world his point of views. No matter what man might think they all need to listen and act like men. He uses this to hopefully open up people's eyes and show that there are different opinions. That's fine, but when it comes to slavery and liberty we need to listen with our ears open.

3.The word "it" is portrayed as someones life in all of our hands. He was very persuasive by letting us know freedom or slavery. We can't do this alone we all have to stand up and "fight. It's liberty or give me death.

4.What God gave us was a world of peace not a world of war. We need to show God the truth in which our country has fallen to slavery. Fight for what we know is right. Let every man live with liberty and peace as we know it. God is really the one over our country and we need to fight and get him back to where he belongs. As the true king of all that we stand for.

5.In using the word Majesty, we all live in Gods kingdom. He is over all of us just like King George the III. We need to respect what he has given us. Not take it all for granted. Our country needs to realize he is our majesty and we need to fight against slavery. Get the liberty back that God has given to us. "Fight."

In Britain, it's an apostrophe catastrophe

Really this is so crazy to be having a huge controversy over such a small thing that's been around forever. I don't agree with doing away with the apostrophe at all, I think it's very important and it makes the statement,or signs as there putting it correct. They look much more formal when you use an apostrophe where needed. Especially on a business sign; your advertising something you want to make money and for the world to have a desire in what your advertising, I think you need to make it look as formal as possible. You want it to sell don't you. Generally people with a lot of money are very proper. But that's my opinion.

If we all do away with the apostrophe whats next? Do we say good bye to the comma's, periods. Even as far as capitalizing letters at the beginning of your sentences. How would we understand what people are trying to say? Especially since this article is based on advertisements, those are so important to come across clearly and correct, so you know exactly what your reading and the advertisement will actually succeed in what it's trying to accomplish.

The big area's of grammar that bother me is words such as there, their, they're. Or even words that have almost the same meaning and its really your personal preference to which one is actually accurate. I do believe silly mistakes like that should not be affected by the writers intentions. There are a few instances where coma's are hard to know exactly where they go, but i do believe we all need to learn the correct way. I would love someone to look up to me because of a wonderful paper I've written or article, and say "Wow look at That". No one in there right mind can deny they wouldn't like to have that same feeling.

MESSAGE BOARD SLANG TALK

Message Board-

Me &my bf have been 2gether for 1yr n we split 4 6months then i got tired of wating i ended up cheating.its been 2 months since that n we broke up b/c it still bothers him.he says its for a lil while till he can b happy again.what do i do?how do i fixit

The correct way to say this in English now is as foll owes:
My boyfriend and I have been together for one year. We split up for, four to six months. I finally got tired of waiting around, so i ended up cheating on him. It's been two months since that happened. We broke up because of that and it's still bothering him. He says it's going to be a little while before he can be happy again. What do I do? How do I fix this?

My Opinion:

Wow I'm really lost for words. This whole message board idea is terrible. I had never been on one before and it was very shocking to see. People just say about anything and in anyway they can to get there feelings out.

The author of this message is telling her life story to a complete world of strangers. Admitting that she cheated on her boyfriend, not knowing what kind of people she's going to get that respond to this. The language she uses came from, really I don't know. It was terrible. Half the sentences were not finished and I had to add words to the sentences just so they would make any kind of sense.

I know I'm at complete fault of some of these slang terms and short words being used. This is a complete eye opener to how pathetic this looks to the whole world. Which in all reality the whole world is reading this. You look under educated and plainly stupid in my opinion. I think people need to step back and take a look at these message boards and maybe it would sink in on how sad and degrading we all have looked at some point. Okay maybe not that bad, because it was bad. I know for me personally I'm going to try much harder at not using those short words. That way they wont become just a habit or an excuse at trying to make things easier per say.
